Are you a Louisiana musician who records original music? Are you looking for ways to get your music used in film and TV productions? Do you want more festival gigs? Then join the Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange – a free service of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

Now more than ever, movies and TV shows are filming on location in Louisiana, thanks in large part to the state’s tax incentives to lure them here. They get tax credits based on how much they spend in the state. The more they spend, the more money they get back. So why don’t they spend more of their money licensing music by our local artists for their scores and soundtracks? Because they don’t know where to look.

The Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange – a free service of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation – is one way to help solve that problem. It’s a searchable, online database of Louisiana music in every conceivable genre. We built it with the needs of music supervisors – the people who choose the music for films, TV shows, commercials and videogames – in mind. They can easily search for music by genre, or by mood, tempo, key signature – whatever it takes to help them find just the right sound to go along with, say, a car chase or a love scene. They can easily sample lots of music, and even save playlists for future reference. Once they zero in on a track they like, they can contact the artist (or the artist’s label or publisher) with one click using the site’s internal messaging system.

Likewise, festival talent buyers – the people who book bands to perform at events around the world – can look for bands by style, or even by tour date. A buyer in, say, Australia, can easily search to see if any Louisiana artists are touring in their part of the world, and possibly offer them gigs.

If you’re a Louisiana musician and you’re not already on the Talent Exchange, please join today. It’s quick and easy – about the same as setting up a Facebook or MySpace page. And it’s free. If you get a gig or a song placed in a movie, we don’t take a cut. There’s just one catch: Because of copyright restrictions, we only accept original music. No cover songs, please.

If you are a music supervisor or a talent buyer for festival or concert engagements, please take a moment to create a free user account on the Talent Exchange. Don’t worry – we don’t publish your contact information, and there’s no way for artists to contact you from the site. So you won’t be bombarded with unsolicited talent submissions.

Questions? Contact the Jazz & Heritage Talent Exchange administrators by emailing: talent@jazzandheritage.org

Production is officially underway in New Orleans on the action-thriller The Tomb. Sylvester Stallone stars as Ray Breslin, the world’s foremost authority on structural security. Breslin is framed and incarcerated in a prison of his own master design, and must now figure out how to break out. Stallone is joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who plays a fellow inmate (and likely accomplice in said jail break), as well as Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Jim Caviezel, Amy Ryan,Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, and new addition Sam Neill.

In an interesting turn, Caviezel will be playing the warden of the prison, with Jones set as his head of security. Mikael Hafstrom (The Rite) is onboard to direct, and I’m really looking forward to watching a Stallone and Schwarzenegger prison break pic. Click here to read the full press release, which has details regarding the other characters in the film.

Two new images and set photo from Rian Johnson‘s Looper have gone online. The futuristic thriller takes place in a world where time travel exists, but is only used on the black market. When the mob wants to kill someone, they send the target 30 years into the past where a contract killer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) does the dirty work. Things are going smoothly until Gordon-Levitt’s future self (Bruce Willis) is sent into the past to be killed. As a huge fan of Johnson’s previous films, Brick and The Brothers Bloom, Looper is easily one of my most-anticipated films of the year, and I’m happy to get a few more glances at the flick.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo, and Jeff Daniels. Looper opens on September 28th.

Via All Movie Photo.

Here’s the official synopsis for Looper:

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Paul Walker is in New Orleans fighting to keep his newborn daughter alive in the wake of a devastating hurricane. That’s the premise of Walker’s new suspense drama, Hours, which the The Fast and the Furious actor is currently filming in The Big Easy. Walker stars as Nolan, a man grieving with the recent passing of his wife while attempting to keep his premature newborn daughter alive after they are abandoned in a New Orleans hospital during landfall of Hurricane Katrina. Complicating matters are the rising floodwaters and frequent power outages that threaten to shut down his daughter’s incubator. The project is one that hits close to Walker’s heart; he’s a father to a 13-year-old daughter. Subject matter aside, the reportedly long hours in front of the camera make this film one of Walker’s toughest films yet. Hours also stars Genesis Rodriguez (Casa de mi Padre) and was written and directed by Eric Heisserer (The Thing).

Slavery is a tough issue for a major Hollywood film to tackle, especially with a white director at the helm, but Foxx tells EW that despite Tarantino’s irreverent edge (Candie’s plantation is called “Candie Land”; Waltz’s character having “Dr. King” in his name), the film does have maturity when addressing America’s shameful history:

“There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way,” the actor says. “You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way.
Foxx also provided some more background on the relationship between Django (who he describes as “Shaft meets Clint Eastwood“) and Schultz:

“Christoph’s character is a little aloof to what slavery actually is. He’s not familiar with everything, and when he sees atrocities, it’s Greek to him,” Foxx says. “But Django lets him know this is the way the world is and we got to get used to it. He teaches Django certain things he needs to become a whole man, and [Django] also teaches Christoph that when life deals you these cards, here’s what you’ve got to do.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Django Unchained:

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, “Django Unchained” stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award®-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award®-nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

Written and directed by Academy Award®-winner Quentin Tarantino, DJANGO UNCHAINED is produced by Stacey Sher, Pilar Savone and Reginald Hudlin. Theexecutive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Leading this year’s list is New Orleans, Louisiana (who was at No. 3 in 2011).

Since the fall of 2000, the criteria for making the much-coveted list has remained the same. All of the top 10 cities “go the extra mile in welcoming lower-budget productions” and indie filmmakers. Striving to do so, they provide:

- Opportunity to screen new films;
- Continuing education for filmmakers;
- A creative community with strong networking events with other film professionals;
- Ample local studio space; and
- Competitive tax incentives for filmmaking.

In the coming weeks, we will visit all of 2012 top 10 locations on the MovieMaker list. To kick-off the series today, we’re featuring New Orleans, reigning this year at No. 1.

New Orleans is one of the world’s most enchanting cities. Historic, mysterious, and even tragic, New Orleans is a mosaic of exotic cultures, mouthwatering food, and mesmorizing jazz music. Today, New Orleans is still in the midst of rebuilding itself since the deadly hurricane season of 2005. The good news is the Big Easy is getting stronger each day. The atmospheric city is slowly regaining its unique multi-cultural and historical beauty before Katrina ravaged its landscapes and people seven years ago.

Photo Credit: Above photo is from here.

Even with the post-Katrina challenges, New Orleans is still as much a magnet for Hollywood now as it was in years past. Did you know that two recent blockbuster films - Green Lantern and 21 Jump Street - were both filmed in New Orleans last year? With a substantial local crew base and many filming equipment rentals available right in the city, it’s easy to see why New Orleans has always been one of Hollywood’s favorite film locations.

This year, out of New Orleans will come a slew of new movies and TV series, including another highly-anticipated vampire flick Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.

The Big Easy is also home to two other important filming assets — a satellite office of FotoKem, the world’s largest independently-owned post-production company, and Maison Post, a brand new film studio.

Maison Post

“One look is all it took for me to want to edit the film here,” says director Simon West who worked at Maison Post on The Mechanic. “Editing is a lengthy and painstaking process, critical to the creation of a film. It is where all the parts — picture, dialogue, sound and music — are pieced together. You need to be in a good spot to make it great.”

Photo Credit: Above photo is from the Maison Post press kit.

Located in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, Maison Post operates out of an elegant 150-year-old mansion. It has guest rooms with state-of-the-art post-production tools where moviemakers can camp out as long as they need to. Its services range from film editing, visual effects, animation, to sound design, and everything else in between.

FotoKem

Founded in 1963, Burbank, California-based FotoKem is an independently-owned, full-service post production facility. It offers a large array of services, from 3D digital filmmaking, film and video finishing, audio mixing to visual effects, restoration, and production rentals.

FotoKem has worked on many major productions including Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Rampart, Footloose,Contagion, and – most recently - Jeff Who Lives At Home (which was also filmed in New Orleans).

“Shooting in New Orleans was one of the biggest honors of my life,” says Jason Segel, one of the main stars of Jeff Who Lives At Home. “It is one of the few magical cities that exist.”

To hear more about what Jason Segel thinks of New Orleans, check out his charming YouTube interview video.

Last year, FotoKem expanded its operations to New Orleans. It opens a new office near the French Quarter. Why New Orleans? The answer is simple. In addition to Louisiana’s generous state-wide film incentives, New Orleans is also where many existing FotoKem customers are shooting their film and television projects.

New Orleans and Louisiana offer one of the best film tax incentive programs in the country. A few of the perks gained from filming in New Orleans are:

30% tax credit on qualified direct production Louisiana expenditures;

Additional 5% tax credit for payroll expenditures to Louisiana residents;

No annual cap; and

Tax credits may be used to offset income tax liability in Louisiana (corporate or personal), sold back to the State for 85% face value, or brokered on the open market.

For generations New Orleans‘ appeal to artists, musicians and writers did little to dispel the city’s image as a poor, albeit fun-loving, bohemian tourism haven. As was made all too evident by Katrina, the city was plagued by enormous class and racial divisions, corruption and some of the lowest average wages in the country.

Yet recently, the Big Easy and the state of Louisiana have managed to turn the region’s creative energy into something of an economic driver. Aided by generous production incentives, the state has enjoyed among the biggest increases in new film production anywhere in the nation. At a time when production nationally has been down, the number of TV and film productions shot in Louisiana tripled from 33 per year in 2002-2007 to an average of 92 annually in 2008-2010, according to a study by BaxStarr Consulting. Movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Morgan Freeman, Harrison Ford are being made in the state this year.

Of course many states and cities have thrown money at the film industry, hoping to establish themselves as cultural centers. Texas, Georgia, British Columbia, Toronto and Michigan all wagered millions in tax dollars to lure producers away from Hollywood and the industry’s secondary hub of New York. There were 279 movies shot in New York State in 2009 and 2010. For all its gains, Louisiana still trails far behind the Empire State with 95 film productions in that period.

Yet New Orleans and Louisiana possess unique assets which make its challenge far more serious than that of other places. A Detroit, Atlanta or Dallas might be a convenient and cost-efficient place to make a film or television show, but they lack the essential cultural richness that can lure creative people to stay. The Big Easy is attracting that type, plus post-production startups, and animation and videogame outfits, giving a broader foundation to the nascent local entertainment industry.

“This is different,” notes Los Angeles native and longtime Hollywood costumer Wingate Jones, who started Southern Costume Co. last year to cash in on the growth in production in the state. “It’s the combination of the food and the culture that appeals to people. It must have been a lot like what Hollywood was like in the ’20s and ’30s. It’s entrepreneurial and growing like mad.”

Critically, Jones adds, Louisiana’s unique culture comes without the fancy New York or Malibu price tag. This is a place where small roadside cafes serve up bowls of gumbo, crayfish and shrimp that would cost three to five times as much in New York, the Bay Area or Los Angeles. Excellent music — from rap to jazz to blues and gospel — can be found simply by walking into a bar and paying the price of a couple of beers. And then there are housing costs, roughly half as high, adjusted for income, than the big media centers.

This mixture of affordability and culture is attracting young people — the raw material of the creative economy — as well as industry veterans like Jones. In 2011, we examined migration patterns of the college-educated and found, to our surprise, that New Orleans was the country’s leading brain magnet. New Orleans was growing its educated base, on a per capita basis, at a far faster rate than much-ballyhooed, self-celebrated places like New York or San Francisco. In fact, its most intense competition was coming from other Southern cities such as Raleigh, Austin and Nashville, the last two of which also share a strong, and unique, regional culture.

Another sure sign of the city’s growing appeal has been a torrent of applications to Tulane University, the city’s premier institution of higher education. In 2010 the school received 44,000 applications, more than any other private university in the country. The largest group, more than even those from Louisiana, came from California, with New York and Texas not far behind.

Increasingly, the Big Easy merits comparison not only to the Hollywood of the 1920s but also Greenwich Village of the ’50s, Haight-Ashbury in the ’60s and “grunge” Seattle in the mid-’80s. These, too, were once appealing places that were less expensive, less predictable and more open to cultural outsiders. Now they’re increasingly too pricey and yuppified for creative people bereft of large trust funds.

Ironically, Katrina provided the critical spark for this transformation. It devastated the torpid, corrupt political and business culture that viewed the arts as quaint and fit only as a selling point for tourists. In its place came more business-minded administrations in New Orleans and in Baton Rouge, the state capital. In both places, economic developers seized on motion pictures, television, commercials and videogames as potential growth industries that fit well with the state’s expanding appeal to this generation’s creators.

Those now building entertainment businesses in Louisiana see the state’s business climate and cultural heritage as key assets. David Hague manages the New Orleans studio of Paris-based Gameloft. When it was opening in 2011 with plans to hire 20 in its first year, he says it received a blizzard of 2,500 applications. Hague thinks the city has basic appeal for young creative people.

“Everywhere you look there is something inspiring either architecturally or historically; not to mention a thriving arts community,” he says. “When you combine all these aspects and project them forward you have the foundation to build a critical mass of employers in the industry that will keep the area competitive long term.”

The growth of games companies, special effects and other post-production houses may be even more important for Louisiana’s long-term cultural ascendency than the surge in filming. Electronic Arts, for example, recently opened a $28.2 million testing facilities in Baton Rouge, an hour north of the Big Easy. Moonbot Studios, which got started in 2009 in the northern Louisiana city of Shreveport, just won an Academy Award for its short animated feature “The Fantastic Flying Books Of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” and appears to be on the verge of becoming a powerhouse in all fields of digital animation.

These companies have the potential to give the state a long-term competitive edge. After all, generous tax breaks, like those now offered by Louisiana, can be offered elsewhere; over the past few decades, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Georgia, Michigan, Texas and New Mexico have all targeted producers looking to save a buck or two. But while incentives can get film people from Los Angeles, where I live, or in the Bay Area or New York to trudge out to work for a bit in Toronto, Pittsburgh or Dallas, few ever think about settling in these places. In the end, they return to Hollywood, and New York, because a critical mass of writers, actors and technicians have congregated and enjoy being there.

Louisiana has a chance to change that dynamic. The rise of support businesses — post-production, animation houses and costumers – gives it the possibility of building a major new entertainment center. With its history, Louisiana offers more than just money and lavish praise for creators. It boasts a vibrant culture that that is not imitative of other regions or dependent on government; it is intrinsic to the place, and reflects a longstanding tradition that goes back centuries.

The rise of the local film industry has enabled the return of some creative former Louisianans who had been forced to ply their skills elsewhere. New Orleans native Huck Wirtz opened his Bayou FX post-production house in November 2010 after 17 years in the Golden State. “When I left here there was no industry to speak of,” notes Wirtz, a veteran of George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic. “We always had artists but they didn’t make much money. Now Louisiana culture is becoming an industry. People see the opportunity here to make this the next big place.”

We saw our first photo evidence of shooting on Now You See Me earlier in the week. ET has followed it up with a piece full of nice footage from the set. The clip gives us a good look at the production, and introduces us to a few of the characters by talking to stars Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Michael Caine, and Dave Franco. Fisher offers the best sound bite:

“We are modern day Robin Hoods. We’re getting back at corporate greed, and we’re distributing the wealth. We’re essentially anarchists—good guys, good magicians, righting the wrongs of the world.”

Although, she also says she likes to think they’re shooting “the sequel to The Bridesmaids because all the boys are so in touch with their feminine side.” So maybe she’s not the best source on what the film is about. No worries. We added the full synopsis after the jump along with the set video and a few screencaps. Mark Ruffalo, Melanie Laurent, and Morgan Freeman also star in Now You See Me, directed by Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans) for release on January 18, 2013.

Synopsis, followed by those screen caps:

The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic ATLAS (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

FBI Special Agent DYLAN (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he’s forced to partner with ALMA (Melanie Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to THADDEUS (Morgan Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians’ crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be…magic?

As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.
